Bhastrika Pranayama, or Bellows Breath, is a dynamic breathing technique that generates heat in the body and purifies the energy channels (nadis). It involves forceful inhalation and exhalation, resembling the blowing of a blacksmith's bellows.
Steps to Practice Bhastrika
- Sit in a comfortable meditative pose (Padmasana or Sukhasana) with a straight spine.
- Take a deep breath in and breathe out forcefully through the nose.
- Immediately breathe in with the same force.
- Continue this rhythmic, forceful breathing for 10-20 rounds.
- Relax and take a few normal breaths. This is one round.
Benefits
- Increases Oxygen Supply: Floods the body with oxygen, improving vitality.
- Detoxification: Clears the lungs and respiratory tract.
- Boosts Metabolism: Generates internal heat, aiding in digestion and weight loss.
- Balances Doshas: Helps balance Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas.
Precautions
Avoid if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or hernia. Pregnant women should also avoid forceful breathing practices.
